22 | 23 HIGHLIGHTS MAHNMAL ST. NIKOLAI Das Mahnmal St. Nikolai steht mitten in der Hamburger Innenstadt. Während der Luftan- griffe 1943 wurde die ehemalige Hauptkirche zerstört. Heute ist die Ruine ein Ort des Er- innerns an die Opfer von Krieg und Gewalt- herrschaft. Im Kellergewölbe informiert ein Museum über die Geschehnisse des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Hamburg. Neben historischen Fakten erwarten die Besucher eindrucksvolle architektonische Einblicke. Der erhaltene Turm ist der höchste Kirchturm der Stadt und wird derzeit saniert. Ein gläserner Panoramalift fährt zu einer Aussichtsplattform in 76 Meter Höhe. The Mahnmal St. Nikolai stands in the centre of Hamburg as a warning symbol. Destroyed during the air raids of 1943, the ruin of the city’s former main church now serves as a place of remembrance for the victims of war and tyr- anny. A museum in the vaulted cellar tells of events during the Second World War in Ham- burg, with historical facts supplemented by impressive architectural views. The preserved tower is the highest church spire in the city and is currently undergoing renovation. It has a glass panorama lift taking visitors to a viewing platform 76 metres above the ground. Darüber hinaus wird die wechselvolle Geschichte der ehemaligen Hauptkirche St. Nikolai an- schaulich dargestellt. Audiostationen sowie ein interaktiver Medientisch laden zur Vertiefung ein. THE NEW PERMANENT EXHIBITION “GOMORRHA 1943 – HAMBURG’S DESTRUCTION THROUGH AERIAL WARFARE” supplies information on the bombardment of Hamburg in the Second World War as well as the causes and consequences of the air raids. Also clearly portrayed is the chequered history of the city’s former main church of St Nicholas. Audio stations and an interactive media table provide further information.
